Geostationary satellites

Geostationary satellites orbit at 22,236 miles above the earth. The major advantage of this is that, at this precise altitude positioned over the equator, geostationary satellites orbit the earth at the same rate the earth rotates.

All of Viasat’s primary satellites are GEO, benefiting our customers and end-users in a variety of ways: 

• Allowing an operator to point each satellite at a particular place on the ground to always cover that area;
• Enabling a much greater field of vision, with one GEO satellite able to cover up to a third of the globe;
• Offering improved satellite productivity: LEO satellites are not always able to monetize their signal since they spend a lot of time over oceans and other unpopulated areas;
• Allowing flexible bandwidth: Viasat’s newest satellites can shift capacity from areas of lower need to areas that need more.
